Is Summer Vacation Cancelled?

12 Jun

With the pandemic continuing to hang on, you may be thinking that there’s no way you’ll be able to go on a summer vacation away from home this year. But maybe you can.

Yes, things are still pretty restricted. But there are still options. By rethinking what “getting away” can mean, you and your family can plan a fun and relaxing trip away from home this summer.

Here are a few great options:

Try Day Trips

Technically, you don’t have to go far to get away from home. You may be surprised to find all of the unique attractions within just an hour or two of your house: parks, museums, fun shops, hiking trails, etc.

A really great thing about the day trip option is that you and your family can get out of the house and see something new, but you don’t have to pack (except maybe a picnic) or need to make hotel reservations anywhere.

Given the relatively short travel time–and the likely variety of destinations available–you could plan a trip for every weekend this summer, if you want.

Take a Road Trip

If flying or taking a cruise sounds unappealing, consider going for a long drive instead. Road trips are a time-honored way to enjoy the scenery and discover places you might otherwise just fly over. Given current social distancing requirements, it’s also a good way to see and do things safely.

To prepare, you should take your vehicle in for a check-up and make sure it is in good shape for a long trip. Depending on where you want to go, you should check out available overnight accommodations and places to fuel up along the way. And, of course, plenty of good tunes and good snacks are essential.

Go Camping

This is a great way to some fresh air and explore while also still maintaining adequate social distancing from others. Recent visitation limits have actually kept conditions in parks and campgrounds fairly pristine. As such, many outdoor recreation areas have become even more lush and full of wildlife for your family to enjoy.

If combining this with a road trip, you could consider campgrounds that exist within several hours of your home. Just be sure to check availability, campground amenities, and reservation requirements before you head out. Nobody wants to be stuck in the car with upset teenagers!

Fly Somewhere

If you really want to get away from it all, go for it. There are flights available, as well as hotel accommodations in many summer vacation-friendly locales. Prices remain low and you just have to be prepared for certain restrictions during your travels. Most airlines, for example, currently require you to wear a mask for the duration of a flight.

Quarantine requirements at your desired destination may be different from what you’re used to at home. Be sure to do plenty of research to see what they are and if they’re acceptable to you. If you find the possible inconveniences getting to your dream vacation spot to be worth it, then go!

Sure, things won’t exactly be like normal, but this year’s summer vacation can still be fun and a great chance to make good memories. Have a great trip!
