The Short Game

18 Sep

An amazing new movie called The Short Game is expected to be released this weekend and features stories of young kids and their experiences with the game of golf. Think Tiger Woods 30 years ago.

The World Championship of Golfers come together to compete and tough it out for the cup. And these kids are only 7 years old!

What I like about the movie is that it shows the close relationship between the children athletes and their ever present parents. It takes quite a lot to raise elite and focused kids and these parents are often traveling and practicing with them for hours on end.

This movie is about dedication to families and in particular, seeing that certain something special in your child and recognizing that you can help foster it. The little ones are so excited to play and quickly learn that winning is not always possible; but oh so much fun! Watching the dad’s encourage their offspring is new to the big screen and certainly a welcome addition.

I enjoy movies that show the persistence and perseverance of our children. They are capable far beyond what we usually expect of them and it’s nice for a film to recognize and celebrate that. It’s heartwarming to see these young kids so happy and proud of their successes.

As a parent, I want my children to be proud of their accomplishments great and small. It’s also nice for budding athletes to see their peers frustrations on camera and learn from them how to deal gracefully with it. Or as graceful as a 7 year old can!

The movie starts this weekend in theaters nationally and the film has already won SXSW and Maui film festival awareds. Be sure to save a few hours for a family outing and stop in to watch the show.
