Let me start off by saying that this is a very busy time of year and my usual routine of reading 3 books each week is laid to rest in an attempt to get caught up on all of the holiday festivity planning I need to finish.  Couple this with the release of our latest book and I didn’t expect to find the time to read Tatted Mom’s new book.

I thought I would just sit down for a few minutes and read a page or two while waiting on the laundry.  Fast forward two hours later and I’ve devoured the entire book and found myself wanting more.  The talented author is Morgan Moss, a tattoo artist and sometimes ninja assassin, creator of The Inklings of Life parenting humor blog, who talks candidly about her unconventional parenting style.

Given our blog’s title, it’s obvious we relate to unconventional.  The difference between us is her carefree, don’t give a damn attitude and in your face assertions.  It was refreshing to finally read a parenting book (yes, I’ve read them all) that tells it like it is-well, like we want to say but never do!  I’ve long been chastised for my overprotective style, Tatted Mom even teases about it in her book, but frankly don’t care if it’s not the way you raise your children; I respect your choices.  And like Tatted Mom, instead of judging other mom’s for their differences, she wants us to all co-exist.  Kumbaya!

Tatted Mom Morgan seems to be that amazing cool chic from school that you wanted to hang out with but were too scared to talk to.  She’s the parent that we envy because she will inevitably be her kids friend when they grow up.  She shares her very personal story (spoiler alert: she almost walked away from it all) in Tatted Mom’s Guide to NOT Screwing Up Your Kids: Colorful Parenting Tips from a Colorful Mother and while you can tell that she’s learned her lesson, she does it unapologetically.  Just like she teaches her children, she lives by the “learn from life’s lessons” mantra. Morgan Moss

The book was full of parenting tips for kiddies through the tween years.  I loved that Tatted Mom gives full disclosure that she isn’t experienced enough to write about the teenage years because she hasn’t reached them yet.  I’m secretly hoping this means we’ll get another book from her in a few years!  The book weaves together helpful advice with humorous stories from Tatted Mom’s own experiences as well as from other moms and dads that she interviewed.

It also includes:

  • The myths that mainstream parenting books tell you, and how they don’t apply to every mother.
  • How to deal with temper tantrums from toddlers to tweens.
  • How to “win” the various battles you will have with your children (like the Personal Hygiene Battle and the Clothing Battle)
  • Tips on dealing with picky eaters and the difficult potty trainee.
  • Helping build your tween’s self esteem and creating a strong family unit.
  • Mom Competition, unplugging your kids, chores, peer pressure and more!

From allowing babies to eat a variety of seasoned “grown-up” foods (yes this chapter made me cringe) to explaining why your 5th grader isn’t allowed to cuss- Tatted Mom’s Guide to NOT Screwing Up Your Kids: Colorful Parenting Tips from a Colorful Mother covers most situations.  And she teaches all of us more rigid, overbearing, out of control parents to remember to loosen up once in a while for our kid’s sake…and ours.

It’s obvious that Tatted Mom has mastered successful parenting- her kids are still alive after all!   Purchase her book here or click on the book above.  Once you read the book, stop by Facebook and Twitter to let her know how much you loved it.
