Cover them up

One big part of protecting your kid’s skin from the sun is covering them up correctly. First, children – and adults, for that matter – should wear sunglasses to protect eyes from UV rays, which can have harmful short term and long term effects. Next, hats offer your little one’s face some extra shade from the sun, making them a must. Finally, rashguards are a great way to protect your child from the sun as they enjoy some time at the pool or beach. These are convenient because they can be worn in the water, which means that kids will love wearing them. Those made of UPF fabric are the best and the most effective in protecting your kid’s skin!

Apply sunscreen often

Sunscreen should be applied often to your children’s exposed skin, using an SPF of 30 or higher. Especially after your little one gets out of the water or has been sweating excessively, you should reapply the lotion. To ensure that a particular sunscreen agrees with his or her sensitive skin, be sure to test it on a small patch of their body the day prior to fully using it to see whether or not it causes any irritation. Always completely cover problems spots such as their ears, the top of their feet, and their scalp and hairline with sunscreen to avoid any harmful and damaging burns to their skin as a result of sun exposure. Sunburns are not only harmful to the health and wellness of your child, but they are also uncomfortable, giving you even more of a reason to lather them up!

Be strategic

Especially when you have little ones in tow, you need to be strategic about sun exposure to ensure that your babes don’t end up suffering from a burn. The sun is typically the strongest between the hours of ten and four during the day, so that is something to be aware of to help limit exposure during times of a high UV index rating. It’s also important to know your area, as your altitude and specific location does have an effect on the strength of the sun. If you will be outdoors with your littles during the peak sunshine hours, though, make sure to provide shady areas to protect their skin and to limit exposure. Bring along an umbrella or even a small beach tent to provide reprieve from the sun throughout the day.

If a burn does occur – it happens to everyone! – there are ways to combat the discomfort and damage associated with it. Use remedies such as applying essential oils, upping their water intake, applying cold compresses to their skin, and using aloe and moisturizers for some instant relief. Remember that the best way to protect your kid’s skin this summer is prevention and take as many measures as you can this summer to reduce the chance of a burn.
