Family camping with the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE

27 Apr

This post is about our family camping trip with the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE 2WD 4-door compact crossover SUV.  We were honored to be selected to drive this vehicle during our week-long vacation. #DriveMitsubishi

Outlander Sport SE in the woods

As parents of a young adult, togetherness is becoming less frequent.  Inevitably, we are taking different paths as we enter this new phase of life. It’s difficult to let go sometimes and I’m thankful that we still enjoy each other’s company.

Our decision to spend vacation camping in the woods was an easy one.  Do what the kid loves and she’ll come.  Our daughter is a nature lover that can’t resist getting out in the open air.  Luckily for us, Florida is filled with wilderness parks.

Prayer of the woods

Camping is one of those adventures that reminds you how much you love your family (or how much they drive you crazy).  No phones, no television and no internet takes some getting used to, particularly as we’re a full time working family outside the home too; used to the chaos of technology.  You quickly realize that you have a LOT of time to just “be” with each other.  They call it quality time around these parts.

Since our Mitsubishi Outlander’s name alone reminds me of traipsing through far off lands, it seemed the perfect fit for our jaunt into the woods.  Imagine my surprise as this Octane Blue vehicle shows up; there goes my chance of sneaking off to Starbucks.  The Outlander Sport was raring to go with its 2.0L MIVEC DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, even though I was a bit skeptical at first glance; it’s smaller than my everyday driver.

No worries, the vehicle fit everything we needed to pack and use on the trip including our Schnauzer. Okay, Tukker is little and doesn’t require much space, but we all had a very comfy ride.  The interior space is deceiving when looking at it from the outside.  It’s very roomy and the rear cargo area is large and if needed, the back seats fold flat.  Open the panoramic glass roof and it seems to get even bigger!  [Hint Hint: Earn bonus parent points and surprise the kids at night by changing colors on the roof’s LED mood lighting]

Setting up camp didn’t take long at all and now we’ve got nothing but time on our hands.  Just Plane Dad is a man of few words and Beloved definitely takes after him.  Much to their chagrin, I can talk enough for all of us and when you’re sleeping in a tent, there’s no place to hide.  I bombard them with questions just to get them sharing.

What’s new with you? Did you see that squirrel?  What would you like to do today?

Beloved is never so happy as when her friends show up.  The more the merrier I say.  We all talk about what we want to do on the trip.  No surprise the kids want to hangout and listen to the Rockford-Fosgate® premium sound system in my new Outlander Sport!  For me, it’s board games and that long overdue book.  Just Plane Dad loves anything automotive so he’ll be checking out the other RV’s and a local car show.  The kids end up in the trees and tracking down animals.

Florida is filled with an assortment of creatures and insects.  Sit around the camp long enough and you’re sure to see something that will make you smile.  We almost always have deer, armadillo, raccoons and even black bears have come.  The kids light up when the deer come close enough to get a nibble of dried corn.  Be careful not to move or they’ll high-tail it out of there-and they are fast! Overnight, the spiders made themselves comfy on the Outlander Sport’s antenna!

When night falls, the excitement of camp begins.  The sky darkens and the stars sparkle overhead.   Campfires brighten up the woods and my daughter’s face-which is now smiling.  You can’t spend time in nature and not come away feeling great.  There’s just something about getting back to “simple”.  Family is the most important thing and sometimes you have to step away from the hustle and bustle to appreciate what you have.  I feel so blessed.

The next morning, we head into town for supplies (and coffee!) and got plenty of attention as people seemed to love the color!  It also comes in Labrador Black, Quick Silver, Mercury Gray, Rally Red and Pearl White.

I highly recommend the Cobalt Blue as finding it in a parking lot is easy; although “he” seemed to have found something too!  And I noticed that on trips into town, the ECO driver indicator light helped us maintain about 28mpg, it’s perfect for our gas budget.

True Love

At the end of the week, we headed home feeling relaxed with a renewed bond between us.  Quiet time with my hubby and daughter always reigns supreme and as I look ahead to the future, I hope that camping remains one of the activities that gets us away from it all so we can just focus on each other.
