How To Raise Eco-Conscious Kids

28 Apr

Positive parenting starts at home, especially when it comes to raising eco-conscious kids. Parents can instill in their children values on global awareness that will ensure the Earth is enjoyed for many future generations to come. Children can be taught how to preserve valuable resources as well as how to protect the environment. Here are a few key ways you can raise your children to be eco-conscious and gentle on their planet.

#1 Have Important Discussions

No matter their age, any child can be taught the importance of protecting the planet. In fact, even expecting parents can get a head start on living eco-consciously. This way when baby arrives, they’ll already be raised in a home that has eco-friendly practices established. Keep in mind that toddlers, school-aged children and teenagers can all benefit from having discussions on green living. As a parent you can empower your children with the knowledge they need to fully understand their individual role in caring for the planet. Have discussions on topics such as pollution, climate change, and the ozone layer. Young minds will absorb this information and can learn to do their part in defending Earth’s precious resources.

#2 Take Frequent Nature Hikes

Furthermore, get outdoors and be surrounded by mother nature! Taking kids on nature hikes or even trips to the backyard will introduce them to best practices on how to care for the Earth. For instance, parents can teach children how to avoid disturbing natural habitats. This could include refraining from breaking limbs off of trees or shrubs, picking up or throwing rocks, and avoiding wildlife. Parents can explain to children the importance of placing litter in designated bins to reduce pollution as well. These are some of the best ways to give children first-hand experiences on how to protect delicate local ecosystems.

#3 Reduce Energy Consumption at Home

Another great way to raise eco-conscious children is to have them reduce energy consumption at home. This could include turning off lights when children leave a room or having them unplug unused items such as device chargers after each use. This will help to save on phantom electricity charges and will reduce your home’s carbon footprint. You can also take measures to preserve water at home. As per the US Department of the Interior and Geological Survey, the average household uses about 80-100 gallons of water per day! Imagine how much water can be saved if children simply turned off the faucet when they brushed their teeth. Such simple changes in habit can yield major results when it comes to saving the planet (it will also help you to reduce your energy bill in the long run!).

#4 Start an Eco-Conscious Family Garden

Parents can also instill eco-friendliness by starting a family garden with their children. Excite children by giving them responsibility over growing their owns fruits, vegetables or herbs. This is a great way to teach children about how different elements like dirt, water and sunlight all work together to support life on the planet. What’s more is you’ll end up with some delicious foods to add to your dinner table. Similarly you can introduce the importance of eating organic produce and shopping locally as ways to save the Earth from harmful pesticides used for growing commercial produce.

#5 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Following the 3 R’s—reduce, reuse and recycle—is another great way to get kids to think about how their actions directly impact the planet. First, children can reduce unnecessary items by donating them to others or simply being mindful of the amounts they use. Children can also reuse and repurpose items, giving them new life. For instance, plastic bags may be used as small wastebasket bags, empty cans can be used as nifty pencil holders and instead of throwing away paper, kids can simply draw or color on the other side. Also be sure to have a designated bin in your home for recycled items. Have kids separate their regular garbage from those that can be recycled. Such activities will reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

#6 Practice What You Preach

Sometimes actions are much louder than words. Therefore, make sure you live up to your own standards when it comes to eco-conscious living. Parents are their children’s greatest teachers. Children will look up to their parents for guidance and will learn many habits from them, including how to protect the environment. Parents can reinforce their values and set the course for a child’s perspective on eco-friendly living by being a good example of this lifestyle. By doing so, children will follow in your footsteps for a lifetime of positive influence on the planet.

Remember, your children are the next generation entrusted with caring for the planet. Take steps to make sure your children are well-equipped for this responsibility by teaching them different ways to care for the environment. Parents can indeed raise their children to be eco-conscious, teaching them awareness of their actions so children are a part of the solution and not the problem.
